How have our ideas and practice concerning drawing changed? What is included in drawing? How can we initiate and sustain a daily drawing practice that will contribute to our artwork?
Drawing in the 21st Century is an ongoing class, offering a variety of ways to create a sustainable drawing practice chiefly through abstract drawing. Drawing classes meet weekly on Zoom to discuss artist interviews, practice drawing skills and review artwork made in response to assignments or in pursuit of individual ideas. Classes have access to a Drawing Resource Page, tailored for each class topic, which features a wide range of contemporary artwork, artist interviews, videos and links as well as other resources (film, books, special materials, etc.) The Abstract Drawing Materials Page includes resources for dry, wet and wet/dry drawing materials as well as useful papers and sketchbooks. Drawing classes are lively and interactive, encouraging development of interesting directions and ideas while creating a useful drawing practice. Weekly follow up emails after each class make the class video recording available for those who want to review as well as assignment suggestions.Class size is limited to 12.

Focus: Paying Attention: Abstract Structures in the Natural World
Summer is a wonderful time to observe nature--plants, trees, birds, animals, water creatures, the whole world is bursting with life. Despite this almost overwhelming variety, the basic structures in nature have a great deal in common. Those structure also translate easily into abstract shapes and composition. We'll draw from nature. creating organic and geometric abstractions and sharpening our awareness of the placement of those elements. If you are interested in early summer drawing, please contact me.

Class format includes listening to artists and discussing their ideas (weekly videos), working with brief in-class drawing exercises and posting our own drawings each week and giving feedback.
We'll use a variety of drawing materials—collage and watercolor/acrylic, our trusty artgraf. Sketchbook papers and sizes are up to you--I use everything from a 3x3" pocket sketchbook to an 18x24” pad of Cason drawing paper. Everyone is encouraged to vary the sizes of their drawings and to explore a range of materials and be inspired by current trends in drawing. The Abstract Drawing Materials Page, a compendium of drawing materials collected from past classes, newly available materials and suggestions will be sent to participants upon registration.

Experiments in Oil and Wax Mixed Media Painting
Ballinglen Arts Foundation

April 24-May 2, 2026
I'm honored and delighted to be returning to the Ballinglen Arts Foundation for a third year. Ballinglen offers a rare opportunity to make artwork in a beautiful, relaxing location in the company of fellow artists. This workshop/retreat includes instruction in oil and cold wax techniques with an emphasis on the uses of a variety of base layers, oil pigment sticks, and the enhancement of painting with collage and drawing. We'll explore the unique natural environment of beautiful County Mayo in north west Ireland, gathering ideas and inspiration from both land and sea. Field trips, accommodations and meals are included in workshop tuition of 2.200. USD.
