Settling Into A New Studio

Sometimes adjusting to a new space feels like vigorously pounding an outside square peg into that proverbial round hole--nothing really fits. And yet. Writing this, I'm glancing out into the pocket garden--an overgrown riot of green anchored by an old, spreading lemon tree--a contrast to the street life of G Street. The downtown studio was wonderful and served me well for many years, but this change to a more natural environment with the walking paths of the North Davis Greenbelt just outside my door exerts its own magic. I've moved studios very few times, but each time has brought about big changes in my work. Place, along with the rhythms and time structures attached to it, are for me, a strong influence on anything I may make.

One of the joys of this new live/work space is room for a small show room, which will change with the seasons. Summer/Fall is up right now and I am basking in yellow, orange and deep green. Mose, the cat, wanders in and out, and is pleased to have me around more. I miss my neighbors--Harrison, the guitar maker and Brooks, fellow painter.  At the same time, there exists a deep peace to the quiet space and light in this new place.
