Online:  Drawing In The 21st Century: General Information

How have our ideas and practice concerning drawing changed? What is included in drawing? How can we initiate and sustain a daily drawing practice that will contribute to our artwork?

Drawing in the 21st Century is an ongoing class, offering a variety of ways to create a sustainable drawing practice chiefly through abstract drawing. Drawing classes meet weekly on Zoom to discuss artist interviews, practice drawing skills and review artwork made in response to assignments or in pursuit of individual ideas. Classes have access to a Resource Page, tailored for the current class topic, which features a wide range of contemporary artwork, artist interviews, videos and links as well as other resources (film, books, special materials, etc.) The Abstract Drawing Materials Page includes resources for dry, wet and wet/dry drawing materials as well as useful papers and sketchbooks. Students post work for sharing review weekly. Drawing classes are lively and interactive, encouraging development of interesting directions and ideas while creating a useful drawing practice. Weekly follow up emails after each class make the class video recording available for those who want to review as well as assignment suggestions.Class size is limited to 12.

Class topics have included 21st Century Drawing, Abstract Landscapes, Themes in Contemporary Abstraction, Text and Drawing, Collage and Drawing and Using Water Media.

Class format includes listening to artists and discussing their ideas (weekly videos), working with brief in-class drawing exercises and posting our own drawings each week and giving feedback.

Materials are covered in the Abstract Drawing Materials Page on Padlet. Link supplied upon registration.

Plan for drawing: Series Work By Way of Small Sketchbooks
We’ll  revisit working in a series this session, but with a bit of a twist. We’ll chose our materials—same sized pieces of paper or sketchbook and some combination of  dry, wet/dry and wet marking materials. Use your favorites or select from the Abstract Drawing Materials page on Padlet. In addition, each  person will also choose overall subject matter to work with. You may dedicate a sketchbook to anything from abstract scribbling and/or geometrics, to abstract landscapes and plant drawings or perhaps you'll want to work with text--whatever piques your interest.

Using your materials and subject matter, we’ll aim to make at least one drawing everyday for the entire six weeks. If you complete one sketchbook or series, you may start another. Or take the option of working on two sketchbooks at once. For example, one conventional sketchbook and one accordion sketchbook. One small and one larger. One with heavy paper, one with lighter. If you’re working on two sketchbooks, we’ll nevertheless stick to a minimum of one drawing a day.
I’ve been doing this for myself all summer and have found it a very effective way to work and learn. It’s also quite a lot of fun—and you’ll end up with a lot fabulous drawings that you can use for inspiration for other work or just enjoy for themselves.
In class
As usual, we'll watch and discuss artist videos as well as work on brief drawing exercises in class.  For image sharing we’ll select several drawings each week to share on our class page
